CGI, Texture & Lighting

Creating textures and materials is a key component for great looking CGI images. Lighting and composistion are crucial too, however, without the right 'finish' a product can look flat and unrealistic.

I gave myself a challenge of making a set of low poly toy soldiers look awesome using only simple lighting and framing. I put a tremendous amount of effort in to producing great textures and materials, focusing on isolating the soldier from the studio background and highlighting the gun. I love the results, what do you think?

Above image ; This soldier has a super reflective finish, based upon a black pearl. The studio lighting is colourful and bright to accentuate all the different angles of the model.

Above image ; This soldier is finished in a non reflective clay texture (normally used to prototype in the automotive industry). The sniper rifle is finished in gloss black car paint.

Above image ; This special forces soldier is finished in gold flake car paint with the box & background featuring black fine grain wall paint. The lighting is fairly dramatic as we felt it suited the rather menasing stance of the model.

Above image ; This soldier is purley technical, he features a transparent white wireframe mesh with the box & background featuring white fine grain wall paint. This model takes on an illustrative finish.

The beauty with CGI is, if you can imagine it, chances are you can produce it!

Above image ; This rather heavy looking special forces soldier is finished in concrete with the box & background featuring grey & white fine grain wall paint.

Above image ; Imagine a special forces combat soldier made from glass! Here he is, reminds us of the bad guy in the Terminator 2 movie.

For this guy, we wondered what the figurine would look like as if made from pure light! This soldier is finished in an LED green light and the rifle is solid iron.
